ANGELS ON HIGH

What is Angels on High?
Angels on High is an exciting outdoors adventure consisting of priests and community members with a goal to raise funds used to help build St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church building in Chestermere.  This year we will be hiking Grizzly Col and Ptarmigan Cirque.

Hike: Junction Creek, Kananaskis

Angels on High 2021
Date: Saturday August 14

Hike: Junction Creek, Kananaskis

The Junction Creek hike is a trail in south Kananaskis west of Turner Valley.
The trail is rated easy to moderate if travelling the whole distance.  This year we are planning to hike approximately 7.5km to a spot that is described in Gillian Daffern’s Kananaskis Trail Guide 4th edition as the “the greatest swim hole this side of the Pacific ocean”.

The crux of the trip will be at the very beginning when we have to cross the Sheep River.  Sandals and ski poles will be very handy for this occasion. The river will not be hard to cross but if anyone needs, assistance to cross it will be provided.  The river will not be deep but it will be refreshing on the feet.
Once on the other side, put on you socks and shoes and head south on the well-marked Junction Creek Trail.   The trail will follow the creek up stream for a few hours up a scenic valley with mountains on all sides until we come to our destination, the Junction Creek Falls. Here we will feast our eyes on a spectacular three tiered waterfall complete with marvelous pools to swim or stand in, to escape the August heat.

This will be a great spot for your lunch and to have some fun. Those with more ambition can continue up further upstream too checkout other lakes and mountain cirques in the area.

Once we have had our fill of scenery, swimming and sunshine, we will head back down the 7km to the river crossing and parking lot.

Driving Directions to Junction Creek hike
From Chestermere head west to Stoney Trail, then south and south again on Highway 2 to  Okotoks.  Turn West (right) at the highway 7 intersection and then go west to Black Diamond.  Here you turn west again on Highway 546, also called the Sheep River Trail,  and continue West until the very end of the road at the Junction Creek day-use area.  (Use one of the lower parking lots).

Camping: Turner Valley Area
We recommend you to do your own booking for camping on Aug. 14th in the Turner Valley area. We will not have a  group camping this year.
