UPDATED HIKE DETAILS
The hike will be on Saturday, September 17, 2022. There is no cost to register for the hike. We still ask that you register to know who is joining the group. There will be two options to hike. An easy and a challenging. From the Owl Group Campground we will leave together at 8:30 am driving to Stoney trail parking lot for an easy hike or head to the parking lot at Driftwood day-use area for the challenging hike. From there we will start our hiking adventure to enjoy the scenery and the view of the larch trees that, despite looking as evergreen trees, they change their color in the fall.
Easy Hike - Troll Falls Loop
Distance: 3.7 km loop
Height gain: 30 m.
Access: Hwy 40. Turn west on Mt. Allan Drive (signed “Kananaskis Village, Nakiska Ski Area”). Keep straight at the first junction, then before the bend, turn right into Stoney trail parking lot.
Key direction: At the four-way intersection, go straight and follow the left bank of Marmot Creek.
The falls are a great introduction to Kananaskis hiking with a great end point view!
Challenging Hike - The Orphan
Distance 3.2 km (one way)
Height gain: 868 m
Access: Hwy. 742 (Smith-Dorrien/Spray Trail). Park at Driftwood day-use area.
The Orphan is an unnamed peak above Canmore, specifically, between Rimwall and the Three Sisters. It is a spectacular viewpoint for the the Sisters, the iconic mountains above Canmore.
Basic directions: 700 m scree walk above Boulder Pass.
NOTE: A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required. This can be purchased from the Alberta Parks site, the link can be found at the bottom of this page.
